Everyone wants to receive honor. No one likes to be dishonored. The word ‘honor’ means ‘merited respect’ or ‘high esteem’ or ‘to carry weight’.
This month, we will meditate on how to receive honor? It is clear from the word of the living God that the only way to receive honor is to give honor? Where and to whom should we give honor to? To God and His word. To honor God means to give God and God’s word more weight than anyone or to anyone’s words.
We find people working so hard to please their boss. Their objective is to receive the honor of getting that promotion or that recognition. Accolades, award and rewards here on earth are honor from men. Those are nothing when compared to the honor that comes from God. When honor comes from God, there is nothing like it and no one can stop it. God’s word says “if you will honor me, I will honor you also.” God has put it within our ability to honor Him and receive honor from Him. What a blessing! Jesus said in John 5: 41, “I do not receive honor from men.” That means, He received honor from God, the Father. We too, must seek to receive honor from God. That is by honoring God.
How do we honor God?
By setting our love upon God : Some have set their love upon their jobs. They are thinking about their jobs all the time. Some have set their love upon their investments. They are constantly looking at their investment accounts. Yet some have set their love upon houses and lands. What have you set your love upon? To find out, a simple test would be to look at your calendar and see how much time did God get in a given week?
Psalm 91: 14, 15 says, “Because he has set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high because he has known my name. He shall call upon me and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him”. If you set your love upon the Lord, then the above blessings will be yours.
God has promises for every one that has set his/her love upon God. That simply means nothing or no one receives your first love. God and His word receives priority in your life. We see a beautiful illustration from the Bible in 1 Kings 19: 6 when Prophet Elijah was afraid of King Ahab’s wife, Jezebel. God ordered the angel to provide food. Your problems, though may look like a big mountain for you, God will answer you. He will be with you in trouble and deliver you as He did to Elijah. God will do extraordinary things in your life too if you honor him.
By serving God always : 1 Samuel 2: 30 says, “Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and your father’s house would minister before me forever.’ But now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained”
Some think that this verse is only for the ministers of God. In these last days, God is calling everyone from everywhere to minister to Him. Anyone can serve God to be called His servant. He is calling the children, youth and the elderly. On the day of the Lord, He is going to call all his servants. In the day of the Lord, he is not going to call all the ‘gifted servants’ to line up. He will, for sure, call the ‘true and faithful servants.’ Do you want to be called out? Then begin to serve God where you are. Go, tell someone about Jesus. Start praying for revival. Do something for Jesus. If you respect God and His work, He will respect you and your work. He is committed to you exactly the way you are committed to Him
Jesus said in John 12:26, “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me, and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.” Jesus said ‘whoever’ serves and that means anyone. He meant all the people regardless of their social, economic or racial background. If you serve Him faithfully, he will meet all your needs. God will do extraordinary things in your life too if you honor him. If you deny him, you finish that sentence.
By giving our first-fruits of all our increase : The Bible says, when we give our first fruits, we honor God. This would mean our earnings from our righteous labor. Proverbs 3: 9, “Honor the lord with your possessions, And with the first fruits of all your increase. So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.” There are many that pretend that these words doesn’t matter anymore. We need to discover what it means and do what we need to. This is no suggestion but a requirement to receive that abundance. God is treating it as an ‘honor’ when we give our first-fruits. We cannot dishonor God and expect honor. God provides means to escape from calamities for the covenant keepers because of His promise to them. Whom you love you will give which includes your giving. Do not say you love the Lord if he is not getting the first portion. I need to look at my check book and see where God fits. You too, need to do the same thing. The ball is in our court. We can choose to honor him or not to. The Lord wants us to choose to honor him so that he can bless us abundantly.
May the Lord help us to honor Him above everyone and everything else in Jesus’ mighty name!
