If you have watched a builder building a house, he goes brick by brick. He does it from scratch. He starts with foundation and builds on it. The stronger the foundation, the stronger the house is. The same thing is true with building ‘your house’. God refers to your household when he says house. I like the famous hymn that goes:
“On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand”
Jesus said in Mathew 7: 24-28 about the wise and the foolish builder. He said, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: “And the rain descended, the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
Jesus was not talking about the house that is made of wood or concrete. We all know what that house is! Jesus was a prolific teacher who was teaching the disciples the valuable lessons about life. Jesus was encouraging them to build their houses on the Word of God and obedience.
Enemy wants to destroy your house:
If there was a time when the enemy touched our homes, it is the time that we live in now. The divorce rates are skyrocketing as never before. We see such a disharmony in the families. The home is the unit that was created by God in the very beginning and a vital part of the society now. But today, we see such confusion in the houses now. Children chose to do their own thing. There is no role model at home. They do not have a good father or a mother to look up to for guidance and instruction. How can this be solved?
Jesus has the solution for this question. He said, ‘who hear My sayings and do them shall be like a wise man who built his home upon the rock’. The key is “word of God” and “obedience”. The devil sneaked into the life of the first couple, Adam and Eve. We know the consequences very well. Therefore, the second Adam, Jesus came into the world and performed the first miracle in a marriage showing that he can do a miracle for your home. You can have a miracle too!
Your marriage may be in a very bad shape. Your children may be rebellious. You feel like throwing in the towel. Your whole house may be on the rocks! Don’t loose heart. I have news for you. The Lord will help you build your house on ” THE ROCK”
Men who did not build their home:
Eli: He was a priest. The Bible says, the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord (1 Samuel 2:11,12). Eli heard evil dealing from all the people about his sons(1 Samuel 2:23). The sons of Eli were called wicked in their generation. The sin of the young men was very great before the Lord (1 Samuel 2:17). Eli was busy serving the Lord at the temple. But his house was not in order. How good it would have been if Eli’s children also served the Lord! We read in the scriptures that the Lord wanted to kill Eli’s sons as they were brought dishonor to the Lord. How sad that is!
David: David was a great king who won eighteen battles but he did not build his own home. He was called a man of God’s own heart but he let someone else raise his children. He was busy building his kingdom and his children we going astray. The Bible says in 2 Samuel chapter 13 about his son Amnon. He committed adultery with one of David’s daughters. David’s children committed sins of every kind. David’s son, Absalom was a rebellious child. He killed all the sons of his father, David. 2 Samuel 13:30 says, ‘Absalom killed all the king’s sons and not one of them is left!” He committed adultery. Joab finally tragically killed him. Why? David did not teach the ways of God to Absalom. David was a very successful king but was not the priest of his own family.
Men who built their house:
Abraham: He put his sacrifice on the altar; and while he was sitting there, the birds, the vultures came down to get the sacrifice. Abraham took his staff and he drove the birds away. That is exactly what the fathers should do. You put you family on the altar, when the evil one comes to get them you got to drive them away. Trouble comes to everyone. But what you do with the trouble matters most. Are you a shelter for your children?
We know the generational blessings of Abraham. Abraham not only was a spiritual father, he is called the “Father of faith”.
Job: Job was a man who was blameless and upright and one who feared God and shunned evil. Job would send and sanctify his children and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all (Job 1:5). The Bible says that Job did this regularly. We need fathers like Job who will be role models for the children, fathers who will rise up early in the morning and spend time with the Lord.
Your house can be a house that stands. If you hear what God says and do them, the rain and the storms of life may come, the winds may blow and beat upon your life, but they cannot shake your house. The foundation is very strong. When we do what the Lord tells us to do, when we obey the Lord, I’ll tell you, when the storm is over, our families will be standing for God. May your house stand! Stand strong in Jesus’ name. Give your children more than inheritance and education. Be a spiritual leader in your house and lead them in the ways of the Lord. Amen!
May the Lord help us build our houses in Jesus name, Amen.
